Music for Pre-Schoolers (18mths - 3 year olds) - postponed till Term 3

When: to be advised (Term 3 sometime)

Where:  Woburn Rest Home.

What: This is a six week course for young children who enjoy playing and moving to music.  The course is going to be run at the Woburn Rest Home so that the children can share the joy of music with the elderly residents.  The six week course will be based on the philosophies of Orff Schulwerk, an approach to learning music that makes connections with the way children naturally play.  Young children learn about rhythm, dynamics, tempo, scales, melodies, and how to play parts in simple ensemble work.  They learn these building blocks of music through singing (poetry, rhymes, and stories), movement to music and body percussion (clapping, stamping, jumping, skipping, dancing), simple instrument work (percussion and pentatonic instruments) and having opportunities to make music in a group by participating in simple small orchestras.

About the Artists:  This course will be co-run by two Orff Schulwerk music educators, Angela Campbell and Priya Gain.  Angela Campbell is an Orff Schulwerk specialist music teacher who is trained to Level 2.  She is in charge of music education at Eastern Hutt School and has been running preschool Orff music groups with Priya over the last five years.

Priya Gain is a primary school teacher specialising in play and arts based education.  She has completed Level 1 Orff Schulwerk training and is currently studying this approach to music education as part of a Masters in Education at Waikato University.
